Why Use Bobbins?
Embroidery bobbins are a tried-and-true method for storing thread, especially when working with skeins that tend to unravel. By winding your floss onto bobbins, you:
- Easily label and sort colors
- Prevent tangles and knots
- Save space in your storage boxes
- Keep your workflow smooth and frustration-free
And when your bobbins are this cute? Organizing becomes part of the creative fun.
A Tiny History of Thread Bobbins
While the exact origin of embroidery bobbin cards isn’t pinned to one inventor, the concept evolved alongside the rise of mass-produced embroidery floss in the 20th century. As companies like DMC began packaging skeins for hobbyists, crafters needed a way to store and reuse leftover thread. Enter the humble bobbin card—often made of cardboard or plastic—designed to mimic the spool-and-shuttle systems used in weaving and early sewing machines.
Today, bobbins come in all shapes and styles, but the heart of the idea remains the same: a simple, reusable way to keep your threads tidy and accessible.
Feel free to download your free printable sheet below and start winding your way to a more organized embroidery setup.
Tip: Print on heavy cardstock for durability, and cut along the lines for best results. A hole punch can also be used to put holes on the top or bottom of the card. Holes aren’t necessary but are handy if you want to put them on 3D rings to keep them organized during transportation.
